Eastenders Stereotype (Phil Mitchell)
Phil Mitchell is stereotyped as being very rash, violent and seen as a "meathead" and the most common stereotype he's associated with is a binge drinker that's always at a pub. In this scene Phil Mitchell perceives all of these stereotypes. The representation is stereotypical because Phil Mitchell embraces this persona of a cockney from the east end of London and he is very violent and boyish, he doesn't take rubbish off anyone and in the scene he's obviously drunk but he's very rude and rash with the way he speaks especially to the women in the pub. The pub is iconic because if he was at home or in a sophisticated bar or restaurant dressed smartly the stereotype would be nothing like they are. In this scene it's fair to say the stereotype is quite realistic of a binge drinker getting drunk at a pub, Phil Mitchell isn't particularly doing anything out of the ordinary especially with the the stereotypes around him and the way he is represented in Eastenders. In other scenes and other episodes Phil Mitchell is very much an exaggerated stereotype however in this scene it's very much realistic. This stereotype is seen across the media especially in England, specifically like football hooligans have very much similar stereotypes. As well as this thugs across specifically London also ride with similar stereotypes as Phil Mitchell very much abides by these stereotypes. In the scene the representation is a reflection of reality as Phil Mitchell is very much following the stereotype he's associated with however it also masks and perverts the stereotype to an extent as not every single man from east London would be spending their day at the pub, drunk and acting in that way.
Kameron, ensure that you are saying what you mean, on line 3 you have said "this scene Phil Mitchell perceives all of these stereotypes", and I think that you mean he "reflects" or "shows" all of these stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteI think you have made a good first effort at this type of analysis and have written some good detail.
WWW- you have given some good examples from this clip of how the stereotype is shown and how you can establish that it has.
EBI- you need to give a specific example from elsewhere within the media rather than a generalised one. AND, I did ask for two characters from this show, either from this clip or another one
Show me- reply to this post and provide the details for the second character and make sure your examples are specific and actual media products
