Representations

In the film, "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not", the lead female character at the start of the film is represented as innocent and seems very lovable and kind for instance surprising what seems to be her love interest with a flower. She is represented as this because this is very stereotypical of a young girl in a new relationship as the audience knows she's only a student. However a the story continues what's noticeable is that she starts to go to great lengths to deliver gifts and surprise her so called lover. However we then learn through the second part of the film that this girl has made all of this up and its all imaginary, the audience later finds out she has Erotomania, a serious mental health issue in which a person believes they're in a serious, passionate relationship when they don't actually know who she is at all.

The narrative works to hide the ending and what is wrong with the girl as its a non linear structure meaning it doesn't follow whats deemed as the norm in the way a narrative should work. For instance, the big switch half way through the film where we watch it again but from the males point of view and how it uncovers all of this to the audience.

Mise-en-scene reflects the changes that are taking place as to start with we see her in a brightly coloured flower shop, all the colours have connotations of happiness and freshness which could be reminiscent of how she as feeling about her new relationship, so she thought. However one of the ending scenes is her walking through a gloomy mental health institute which has connotations of being blue and craziness. This is reflective of how the audience sees her at the end as she is represented as "crazy" and as a "psycho". As well as this the lighting in the house she stays in slowly gets darker which has connotations of the effects her mental illness is having on her as she believes Loic is being horrible to her and ignoring her when in reality it reflects how dark Erotomania can be for someone who suffers from it. Towards the end of the film the girl also stops wearing as brighter clothes and is noticeably more pale, this also directly reflects what Erotomania can do to someone who truely believes in their own world and she's represented like this so when the audience find out what is wrong they can make the links.
