Analysing Hawaii Five O Genre and Narrative Focus
1. The programme shows the crime genre through the obvious action and right from the first scene we can see the cars used in the short chase scene is a police car. Hence the two police officers, dressed in uniform and driving police cars. This is also shown through the characters as they're agents investigating criminals. The setting of a prison and a police station.
2. Representations of males in the programme are reinforced due to them being aggressive, assertive and stereotypically muscly and defined. However the representations of females are challenged as the man are often found depending on females which challenges the stereotype of females being weak. The females in Hawaii Five O are also completely equal to the men and are treated the exact same.
3. The programme uses enigmas as throughout there are references to earlier story lines that new watchers wouldn't understand. As well as this there are questions left unanswered that will most likely be answered in episodes to come for instance, what will happen with Chin through his recovery? , What will happen between Chin and the nurse?.
4. Hawaii Five O follows Todorov's Equilibrium Theory. For instance the equilibrium is the police gang eating breakfast together, the disruption is Chin being kidnapped and taken, the recognition is the rest of the characters not hearing anything from Chin and becoming worried hence them investigating his house, the reparation is them flying to the prison and attempting to save Chin, and finally the restoration is Chin getting hospital treatment and equilibrium returning, for now.
